The Oregon Queen–May 2019

Taylor Ann Skramstad, 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon!

April was a month full of learning! We started off the month with our annual Miss Rodeo Oregon Clinic and our main clinician Keri Sheffield! We learned and practiced many of the skills necessary to be outstanding representatives for the sport of rodeo. For me especially it was early mornings, full days of learning and late nights for my homework.

I was also able to carry the American flag and help where needed. Rodeo Jeopardy was a fun way for us to practice our rodeo knowledge, and I got to use the color pairing section to help me figure out some colors for my Miss Rodeo America wardrobe. Also can’t forget to mention the food was absolutely amazing!

I spent the middle of the month catching up on homework and preparing for the busy summer months ahead. I’m so excited to unveil all of my planning and custom pieces at the Portland Rose Parade in the beginning of June!

To conclude the month, I was able to attend the Chief Joseph Days Rodeo Queens Coronation, which was a lovely event! Their court got to model their wardrobe pieces throughout the night, and we were blessed with stories from the 1949, 1959, 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, and 2009 courts! I was also surprised with a sponsorship from the Chief Joseph Days Board of Directors, and am so thankful for that!

Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore!

April wasn’t as busy as March, but it sure was a great month! We kicked things off with the Miss Rodeo Oregon clinic in Madras. It was an amazing weekend filled with a lot of information and tools passed down by former Miss Rodeo America Keri Sheffield, the beautiful former Miss Rodeo Oregon Kayla Vincent and MRO board members.  The things learned during the three day clinic were things that were valuable for not only those wanting to pursue a title, but for successful networking, public relations and communications.

There was a good turnout and I met some wonderful new friends and learned things that I will use in everyday life.

I was able to visit  a Lutheran school in The Dalles, where I was able to teach another Ag in the Classroom class. I have come to really enjoy visiting the kids in classrooms. The students have been so welcoming, inquisitive and it’s been an amazing experience.  I love sharing the world of agriculture with these kids, who might not otherwise learn anything about where their food comes from and how agriculture keeps the world turning….

Until next month!

April started off with a bang! Getting to attend and be a part of the Miss Rodeo Oregon Clinic was a true pleasure. With the head clinician being Keri Sheffield, we learned a lot and had some great leadership throughout the event in Madras Oregon. Keri was the 2018 Miss Rodeo America and 2017 Miss Rodeo Florida. The MRO board once again put on a great successful clinic and if you didn’t get to attend this year, make sure and sign up for next years clinic.   You don’t want to miss it!

April has been prep and prepare time before the season of travel officially kicks off. I worked with my sponsor Toolin Turquoise Leather Co. on my tack set and saddle pad from Best Ever Saddle Pads for a unique cactus look to go with my cactus chaps. I also got together with my sponsor Tani Wenger Photography for a photo shoot to get autograph sheets and I have been working with my sponsor E & R Graphic Designs for the trailer graphics that are coming to showcase all of my sponsors.

I got to enjoy Easter with my Wilkinson Creations family and my mom.  Meeting up at the Pineville Leather Show with my sponsor Painted Hills Custom Leather was another April highlight. All visiting royalty got to visit with the vendors and sign some autographs. Looking forward to May because there are some more fun events on my schedule!

Thank you to my sponsors big and small!  I couldn’t do this without you all!

The Oregon Queen–April 2019

Taylor Ann Skramstad, 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon!

March started off great, as I traveled to celebrate our 2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon, Rowdy Israel’s coronation! It was a lovely, well attended event with amazing food! The taco bar was definitely a hit for me, as I got to indulge in one of my favorite snacks: guacamole!

I then took a trip to the West Side of the state to attend the Canby Rodeo Court Coronation! I had so much fun being able to help with the auction as well as bringing a pie for an auction item from my hometown store: Tate’s Umapine Mercantile. Congratulations to Queen Savannah, and Princess Madeleine; I can’t wait to see you along the rodeo road this year and especially spend time with you during the Canby Rodeo, while hosting the Miss Rodeo Oregon 2020 pageant!

I then flew across the country again to attend the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo in Kissimmee, Florida to represent the Columbia River Circuit and our Oregon contestants! I was very busy carrying sponsor flags for two of the performances, helped with the “Fill the Boot Campaign” for the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund, signed autographs at Boot Barn, promote the RNCFR at the Country Thunder Music Festival, and present the colors on foot with a huge American Flag along with the other visiting queens.

To finalize my travels for the month, I attended the first rodeo of the Columbia River Circuit, and our first Oregon PRCA rodeo of the year, The High Desert Stampede. While I was there I got to volunteer at the Rascal Rodeo, and help with pushing cattle during the rodeo performances! It was such a fun trip, and an amazing rodeo to start off the season.

Cheerfully, Taylor Ann

Meredith Moore, 2019 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon!

At Rowdy’s coronation with Taylor Ann and Miss Sweetheart Rodeo Oregon Paisley Gibson!

March was a very exciting month! It kicked off with our Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Rowdy Israel’s coronation! It was hands down one of the nicest coronations I have attended. Everything was outstanding.

I attended the Rascal Rodeo Fundraiser in Pasco, WA and met amazing people that were there to show their support of such an important, life changing organization. RR provides an opportunity for those with special needs to hang out with cowboys, learn how to rope and also ride horses. The pure joy it gives the participants is something that makes my heart happy.

Soon after, I received my instruction packs for Ag in the Classroom’s literacy program. Ag in the Classroom is the platform I am supporting during my year as Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon. I am a longtime member of 4-H and FFA, so agriculture is a huge part of my life. It’s very important that we educate people on how agriculture is part of their daily lives. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to visit schools across the state and give fun, educational presentations to elementary school children.

For the last four years, during spring break, I have attended the 4-H Youth Voices in Action conference in Salem. It’s a wonderful program that introduces everyone to the legislative process, interviewing and public speaking. I was fortunate enough to serve as an “intern for a day” with my local representative, Greg Smith.

The month ended on a high note by attending the High Desert Stampede in Madras. I had a great time volunteering at the Rascal Rodeo, visiting vendors and members of other rodeo board members that were there.

2018 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon Lauren Gibson handing down the crown to 2019 Jr Miss RodeoOregon Rowdy Israel while 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Addy Crouch announced the coronation.

Wow! Just like that March was here and it was Coronation time! I have been anxiously awaiting this day since last July when I won the pageant. As I watched all the planning and preparation come together, from the chap parade to the auction to the crowning, we all had a great time! I was so blessed to have an amazing turn out of well over 300 people that showed up to help me celebrate! All of the cactus decorating was “on point” with big and little guests, all enjoying themselves. I had a wide variety of auction items, big and small, and there was something for everyone. Lauren Gibson, 2018 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon, said her goodbyes and handed down the crown to my hat for the year as everyone watched. I want to send out a big Thank You to Lauren for always setting a great example for me and others during her reign. I am beyond excited to carry this crown and continue to give the younger generation someone to look up to. Without a doubt I am extremely blessed to have great support from the amazing community that I live in, great sponsors, family and friends that came from near and afar to enjoy this amazing night together, I can not thank you all enough for the outpouring of support!

The very next weekend, I was off to Bend, Oregon for the celebration and coronation of the 2019 Miss NPRA Emylia Breckel. The NPRA (Northwest Professional Rodeo Association) has always held a special place with me since I had the privilege of representing them as the 2017 Lil Miss NPRA.  It was great to go and represent as your 2019 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon and help out at her coronation.

Then I was off to Yakima, Washington to celebrate Glenwood Ketchum Kalf Rodeo Queen Laramie Gladley’s coronation. I got there a few hours early and got to help decorate with sunflowers to spread some cheer for the lovely evening. Fun to see fellow queens that I knew from the past and meet new queens that I will see down the rodeo road this year. Then I got a weekend at home to prepare for the upcoming Miss Rodeo Oregon Clinic in April.  Super excited to go to clinic and learn from 2018 Miss Rodeo America and 2017 Miss Rodeo Florida, Keri Sheffield! So much to still learn.

Then off to the High Desert Stampede where Dennis Fast and his crew put on an exceptional show in Redmond, Oregon. There was a kids only rodeo Friday where I met up with 2018 Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon Lauren Gibson, 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Addy Crouch and 2018 Miss Rodeo Oregon Jessi Cornforth, along with 2019 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore. We handed out lots of autographs, stickers and kids rodeo coloring books. Later that day at the evening performance of the High Desert Stampede I met up with 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon Taylor Ann Skramstad for some autograph signing. Saturday didn’t disappoint with the Rascal Rodeo for people with special needs in the am, to visiting my sponsor Suspension Specialties in Bend, then back to the High Desert Stampede for an exceptional night performance of rodeo!

I can not say this enough because I could not do all of this without my amazing lineup of sponsors, family and supporters–Thank You All!!

The long awaited Cactus Chaps were one of the highlights of my coronation night. So happy with how they turned out and we were very excited to show everyone! Thanks to Shasta Leatherworks for working with me on these one of a kind Cactus Chaps!!! Your sponsorship is very much appreciated!

The Oregon Queen — March 2019

2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon Taylor Ann Skramstad!

It’s that time again; another month has passed and February was jam packed full of amazing experiences! I interviewed for several news outlets such as the La Grande Observer  and LaGrandeAlive.TV. I am so grateful to be going to college in a town that is so supportive of my endeavors!

Being escorted by my grandpa Wayne Skramstad; he says he’s excited for my America send off so he can do it again!

My coronation night was one to remember, surrounded by my closest family and friends! With it being during the crazy snowstorm, I’m so thankful to everyone who took the time to brave the weather to come and support me! It was an amazing and elegant evening at Wildhorse Resort and Casino. Special thank you to Kayla Vincent (MRO 2017) for giving the invocation as well as stepping in to crown me since Jessi couldn’t make it due to the weather. Huge thank you to Shane Laib, the emcee, and Randy Grudzinski, the auctioneer, for spending your evening working together to help my night run so smoothly. I cannot thank you two enough for everything you have done for me in the past and continue to do. I also want to thank my friends Virginia and Harlee for helping with the set up and keeping me calm during the day.

The next morning I was up bright and early to trek to the airport for the next most unforgettable eight days of my life (thus far)! I flew to Kissimmee, Florida for the 75th Annual Silver Spurs Rodeo, also known as the famous “Florida Queen Week”. While there I experienced so many things I never imagined experiencing such as hunting wild hogs, eating frog legs and fried EVERYTHING, drinking my weight in southern sweet tea, visiting Give Kids The World, riding on an airboat, and wrestling gators. While visiting several schools, I never thought I would visit a place where everyone would comment on me having an accent! I made some amazing, lifelong friendships while I was there! I have some amazing sash sisters, and we all had quite a blast getting to really know each other since meeting as Ladies-in-Waiting in Las Vegas. I would like to extend a huge thank you to Laura Kessler for making the entire trip possible and the Clair family for hosting Cheyenne (Miss Rodeo Louisiana) and me for the week as well as letting us use your horses for our grand entry during the Silver Spurs Rodeo. I can also say that Cheyenne and I instantly bonded and are now the best of friends; we talk to each other on the phone everyday and have so many amazing plans for this summer!

After coming back to the slightly colder state of Oregon, I got to enjoy spending a weekend in my hometown celebrating Meredith Moore being officially coronated as Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2019! It’s so amazing to see all our community support and excitement as she begins her year and it was truly a lovely event!

As I finish out this term of school and prepare for the next 10 months of rodeo season ahead, I am so excited in the month of March to celebrate the coronation of our Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Rowdy Israel, receive my custom Miss Rodeo Oregon chaps, return to Florida to support our Oregon cowboys and cowgirls at the Ram National Circuit Finals Rodeo, and attend my first Oregon rodeo, the High Desert Stampede!

I don’t think I could ever express the gratitude and blessings that I have received to have the opportunities I do during this year. I am continuously thankful!

Cheerfully,

Taylor Ann Skramstad, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2019

2019 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore!

February has been a GREAT month! I was happy to attend our Miss Rodeo Oregon’s official coronation in Pendleton, OR. It was a very special evening celebrating an amazing lady. The venue was wonderful and we were served a fantastic meal.  Wildhorse did an awesome job.

As the month progressed, I was busy soliciting auction items for my own coronation. It was super hectic, but it was nice to visit the local businesses and connecting with both repeat and new supporters.  It always amazes me what a great community I live in.

Finally, the big day came. It was all I could have hoped for and more. I was lucky enough to have Kayla Vincent serve as my MC and she really did an amazing job of making it a fun evening. Becky and Eric Green provided the best tri-tip dinner around and everyone seemed to really enjoy it.  Both Addy Crouch and Bethany Rowe made the trip to officially pass the crown. It was a night I will always remember and I am so grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.

Next, I’ll be heading to Rowdy’s coronation in John Day and I can’t wait.  Stay tuned, March is going to be a fun month!

Four great guys trying out for the Mr. Cowboy title!

2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Rowdy Israel!

February was here and February was gone, just like that! It was a busy lil month in February, starting the month off with an all day basketball tournament and then the next day traveling up to Pendleton to The Wildhorse Resort to celebrate the coronation of Miss Rodeo Oregon Taylor Skramstad! The weather decided it needed to dump a bunch of snow that weekend, unfortunately making travels difficult for some people to attend. I was glad that we had no problems, made it safely, and got to enjoy in her amazing coronation. Congratulations again Taylor! I am looking forward to following in your footsteps. We picked up some supplies for my coronation and headed back home the next day for more basketball games that following week. Between school, basketball, woodshop projects, and visiting with potential sponsors, collecting donations for auction at my coronation and some sleep, my weeks were very busy!

We then loaded up and traveled to to the Milton Freewater Community Center for the coronation of Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore. Travels were a lil less snow covered this time and it was also a nice venue and great turn out. So much fun getting to see and visit with everyone and watch both Miss Teen Rodeo Oregons of last year receive their saddles from Bob Roy Custom Saddles. Then the snow started to fly that night and travels home for many were slow and snowy. We grabbed some more supplies for my coronation the next day and made it home safe. Then just like that, the week was here… the week that I had been waiting for… it was time to start setting up for my coronation! The snow continued to come down, day after day. We got a couple snow closure days from school that week but it was worrisome for everyone that was going to have to travel to get to my coronation. We kept watching the weather and road reports and decided to keep on schedule with my coronation and boy am I glad that we did! Unfortunately not everyone could make it due to the weather (from the roads to a hard calving season due to the weather) but thankful for everyone that was able to attend. Can not wait till next month to tell you all about my coronation, March 2nd! I could not make my travels and coronation such a success without the support from my amazing sponsors, family, friends & supporters! Thank You to all of you for everything you do!

Meredith and I helped out at the Taylor’s coronation auction.

So excited to hang my banner on the fence at Grant County Fairgrounds!

Congratulations to Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore!

Miss Rodeo Oregon Queen Clinic!

We have less than a month until the 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon clinic begins in Madras, Oregon from April 5-7!  We are delighted that Keri Sheffield will be joining us to inspire us with her message.  We have a very full schedule planned with two evening sessions and two full days of instruction.  Horsemanship has been divided into two sessions which we have found is more productive than a day-long arena experience.  We will be offering instruction at different levels based on experience and interest.  The clinic price includes six filling meals plus snacks, a clinic manual (and a separate one for parents and advisors), T-shirt, and expert instruction from our staff who have decades of experience as pageant directors, horse judges, former Miss Rodeo Oregon titleholders, and rodeo queen judges.

Keri hails from Summerfield, Florida and currently resides in Fort Worth, Texas. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Berry College in Rome, Georgia and served on two mission trips to Costa Rica. Now working as a trauma intensive care unit nurse, Keri plans on continuing her education to become a nurse anesthetist and pursue her dream of serving as a medical missionary. Keri served as the 2010-2011 Florida High School Rodeo Association Queen, placing in the top ten at the National High School Rodeo Association Queen contest in Gillette, Wyoming. In 2017 she went on to win the title of Miss Rodeo Florida, winning the categories of personality, appearance, photogenic, speech, and horsemanship. Most recently, Keri was crowned Miss Rodeo America 2018, winning the categories of personality and appearance, receiving the Dea Family Foundation Field of Science Scholarship, and becoming the first ever Miss Rodeo America from the Sunshine State.

Flashback to The Oregon Queen April/May 2005

Almost fourteen years ago, Steve Kenyon wrote this article for the Oregon Queen newsletter.  Back before he became famous with ProRodeo Live, he was “our” Steve Kenyon, a Pendleton native and rodeo announcer.  In 2009 he was awarded the PRCA’s Excellence in Broadcast Media Award.  The words he wrote then still hold true and serve as a reminder of “Arena Etiquette for Queens from a Pro!”

Some thoughts on your time in the arena…..

As a rodeo announcer I spend a lot of time dealing with rodeo’s royalty.

I’ve had the chance to see a lot of young ladies make everyone’s life pretty easy, and occasionally to make a few people’s lives more difficult than they need to be.  I’ve been asked to share a few thoughts….

Your relationship with the announcer at any rodeo you go to is pretty important because when it comes time for you to be introduced, the announcer is the person doing the introducing.

Please make his life as easy as possible.  This is really a pretty simple thing to do.  Get there on time, which means get there early.  If the performance starts at 7 and you would like to make a run-in in the grand entry, you should be there early enough to find the arena, to find the person coordinating the opening, and to ask what else you can do, be it signing autographs or chasing cattle or helping out in some other way that puts both you and your rodeo in a positive light.  In Flagstaff, AZ a couple of years ago a visiting queen showed up at 7:05 for the 7:00 rodeo.  Her mom came running to the announcer’s stand literally expecting us to stop this hundred thousand dollar event for her little girl.  All she accomplished was creating havoc in announcer’s stand during the grand entry.

You need to make sure you are checking in with the right person.  Most well run events have someone who is coordinating the visitors and who will then give that list and their information to the announcer in the proper order.  Work with that person and his or her system.  I once had a queen’s advisor try to skip by the proper order of things and come straight to me, thinking it would get her girl some extra exposure.  All it did was irritate a lot of people.

I can’t tell you how important it is for you to make whatever you are going to provide as easy to read as possible.  If you can produce something printed in large type with the essential information about you and your rodeo, that is best.  Don’t scribble something hard to read at the last minute.  If your name is frequently mispronounced, you might spell it phonetically on your card and point out the correct pronunciation to the queen’s coordinator or the announcer himself if you have a chance to talk to him.

Remember too that your first priority is to represent your rodeo.  I’ve probably only got a very limited amount of time to introduce you.  I need to know your name, the name of your rodeo, what city it’s in and when it takes place.  If there’s extra information like a special event that accompanies your rodeo or your parents name or the name of your horse, you can include it and I’ll get to it if I can, but please make sure you put the important stuff first.

Always be prepared, particularly if the announcer is horseback, to say something about your rodeo if you are asked.  I like to try to ride up to the queens and give them a few seconds to invite people to their rodeo during a slow spot in the team roping or the calf roping while they are running cattle.  The question will be simple and painless, and the microphone I’ll shove in your face for the answer won’t bite.  You should always have a quick 15-20 second answer about your event in your mind that you can grab ahold of when you need it.

If you are in the arena chasing out livestock, remember to get your job done and then get out of the way.  You’ll start in a corner where you don’t interfere with the roping box.  In the calf roping, wait until after the run is completely complete, including the judges six second count after the cowboy has gotten back on his horse.  When the untie crew moves in, then you can too, and after the calf has left the arena, come back down the side, not down the middle.  In the bulldogging don’t interfere with the horses; bulldoggers spend hours teaching their horses to go to the end of the arena and don’t like other people getting in their way.

A final thought for you.  You should always know our sport, our history and our heritage.  I think it’s as important for a queen to be able to speak clearly and to tell our story as an articulate representative of rodeo as it is to look good in the arena.  You need to understand the rules of our sport, the animal welfare concerns that we address daily, and have a good grasp of current events and what’s going on in the world.

If someone from a TV or radio station or newspaper asks for an interview, try to find out what they would like to know so you’ll be able to prepare your answers in your mind.  Remember, the interviewer probably won’t have a good understanding of rodeo, and you might have to give a good answer to a dumb question.

Hopefully these tips will do you some good.  I really respect how hard all of our royal ladies work on behalf of our sport, and look forward to seeing many of you down the road.

Steve Kenyon, PRCA Announcer.

The Oregon Queen — February 2019

2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon Taylor Ann Skramstad!

Carrying the American flag at the Columbia River Circuit Finals. It always means the world to me when I am allowed to present the colors of our great nation!

I cannot believe my first month as Miss Rodeo Oregon is already over, but time sure flies when you are having fun (and are extremely busy)! I loved being able to attend all the performances at the Columbia River Circuit Finals. Jessi Cornforth (2018 MRO) and I had the honor of carrying the American Flag at the Friday night performance. Cheering on our Oregon cowboys and cowgirls was so fun, and I’m so fortunate to call some of them past college rodeo teammates and friends. I was also invited to attend the Committee Meeting with Miss Wilderness Circuit, Jayna Scadden. I got to hear first hand of the hard work and effort that all of our PRCA Rodeo Committees put into making our Circuit the best it can be for our contestants and communities.

I then was able to attend the 2019 Milton Freewater Pioneer Posse Annual Meeting and Coronation! It was such an amazing experience being back where I held my first title, and see my grandpa Wayne Skramstad be inducted into the Hall of Fame. This organization has built the foundation for my rodeo career, both queen and contestant! I cannot wait to see the impact that Queen Kylee and Princess Alexis make as they represent this year.

The next morning I flew out to Denver, Colorado for the National Western Stock Show. I was there for three action- packed days and several rodeo performances! I got to carry flags for two of the rodeo performances on the Cervi Championship Rodeo Company horses, Miami and Magic. I was not ready to go back to school, and wish I could have stayed there for the rest of the rodeo! The NWSS hospitality is absolutely amazing.

The rest of the month was dedicated to preparing for my formal Coronation Gala and Fundraiser. I have received so much support from my local businesses and am so grateful for each and every one of them. Thank you so much to Basel Cellars Winery, Humbert Asphalt, Walla Walla Fair and Frontier Days, Bobbie and Virginia Conner, Pendleton Round Up and Happy Canyon, Richartz Brothers, and a special thank you to Noble Panels and Gates Inc, Wildhorse Resort and Casino, and Pendleton Hat Company!

Always so grateful for Perk at Pendleton Hat Company; he takes such amazing care of me and stay tuned for some of my custom colored Pendleton Hat Company hats!

2019 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore!

What a month! I kicked off the New Year with my first event as the official Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon 2019, which was the 2018 Columbia River Circuit Finals Rodeo in Yakima.  I had an amazing time making new friends, helping some special needs cowboys and cowgirls get their rodeo on at the Rascal Rodeo, something I love to do.  I also helped raise money to stomp domestic violence, by selling purple feathers to those in attendance. It was a great weekend where I was able to watch some of the best rodeo athletes around compete in one of the toughest sports around.  It was also a special time because it was the very final performance for Rowdy Barry and Ryan Wilson, who took off their cleats one final time as they head into retirement.

I also helped crown the incoming Milton Freewater Pioneer Posse Court at their coronation. It was a special night filled with a lot of wonderful people.

Next, was the 2019 Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo Court coronation. There, I met new friends and saw some familiar faces, and of course I got to watch the next generation of young women taking on the task of representing the great sport of rodeo as well as their awesome county.

Currently, I am getting ready for Taylor’s upcoming coronation for Miss Rodeo Oregon, which will kick off the month of February! In between the events I’ve been attending, I’ve been gaining some exciting new sponsorships and donation items for my coronation coming up February 23rd! I’m really looking forward to it, as it should be a fun night. Hope to see you guys there!

A special thank you goes out to Noble Panels as they join my sponsorship team. I greatly appreciate your support!

Posters are hung from Vale to Portland, Oregon!

Wow! January really flew by fast! After attending the New Years Eve Hoof n Holler Rodeo in Albany Oregon, I headed back home to start promoting my upcoming coronation–hanging posters, handing out invitations, and visiting with friends, sponsors and donors to make sure they all knew they were invited to my coronation and appreciated for their support.

A visit to the Chamber of Commerce in John Day and an appearance at our local Grant County Fair Board meeting were just a couple things that got incorporated into my schedule in the first couple weeks of January. My travels took me to Central Oregon for three weekends in a row, with the last weekend attending the Jefferson County Coronation in Madras. Such a fun night!  I’m now looking forward to February, attending the Miss Rodeo Oregon and the Miss Teen Rodeo coronations, along with finalizing the last details of my coronation.

Mark your calendars to attend my coronation party and fundraiser on March 2 at 6 pm in John Day Oregon. Come one, come all and let’s “Taco About a Party” with a full taco and beverage bar and silent and live auctions that include some very unique one-of-a-kind handcrafted items. My family and sponsors are amazing and I want you all to meet them! See you all there!!

The Oregon Queen — January 2019

Ready for 2019!  Meet Taylor Skramstad, 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon!

While reflecting on 2018, I can sure say it was quite the year! I’d spent the whole year preparing to compete in the Miss Rodeo Oregon 2019 pageant in August and it sure was quite the experience! I had so much amazing support from my community and I was so excited to take that energy to pageant with me!

After winning, things sure haven’t slowed down a bit! I’ve been planning my coronation, designing wardrobe pieces as well as my chaps, and getting things ready for my year! I also got to attend a few events as lady-in-waiting like the Gaston Car Show, the 2019 Miss NPRA pageant, Jessi’s Good Luck Party, and–most importantly–the 2019 Miss Rodeo America pageant!

It was such an amazing experience being in Las Vegas during the National Finals Rodeo, as it was my first time ever attending! I got to watch the first round of the NFR in person and experience Cowboy Christmas as well. Being present at the Miss Rodeo America pageant to support Jessi was such a learning experience, and she did so amazing! I also got to meet some of the other 2019 State Queens I will be traveling with for the next year. We all had a special lady-in-waiting breakfast with 2018 Miss Rodeo America Keri Sheffield where we got to get to know each other and ask Keri questions about anything and everything!

I am so excited to begin 2019 with a busy schedule. While juggling my college classes and athletics, I will attend three events in January–The Columbia River Circuit Finals in Yakima, Washington, the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado and the 2019 Milton-Freewater Pioneer Posse Royalty Coronation and Annual Meeting in my hometown.  The last event is an extra-special event for me as I was their 2010 Princess and 2011 Queen and my grandpa is one of their 2019 Hall of Fame inductees!

I cannot put into words how grateful and blessed I have been with this experience so far. I am forever thankful for the journey ahead!

Cheerfully,

Taylor Ann Skramstad, Miss Rodeo Oregon 2019

Happy New Year! It’s finally 2019 and we are off and running. I have been looking forward to this time for months and I am very excited to represent Oregon over the next year. I have big boots to fill; both Addy and Bethany did a wonderful job as they traveled the state, sharing their love of rodeo with everyone they met. I am grateful for all the tips and advice they have given me, helping me prepare for my own year.

Over the last couple of months, I have been reaching out to businesses across the state in an effort to find sponsors to partner with in 2019. I’m thrilled to announce the following business sponsors that have pledged their support so far: Les Schwab Tire Centers, D and B Farm Supply, Thompson Brother’s Excavating, Roger’s Toyota, MacCo Distributing, Blue Mountain Telecommunications, Garner’s Sporting Goods, Royal Stewart Arena, and Grapevine Training/Versatile Performance Horses with Lisa Thonney. This list will be growing, so stay tuned. In the coming weeks you will see sponsor highlights on both my Instagram and Facebook pages. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities, please contact us for more information.

Kicking things off right, my first event is the Columbia River Circuit Finals in Yakima, WA. I am really looking forward to attending as MTRO, seeing many old friends, and I plan to make as many new connections as I can. From there, it’s a busy coronation season as 2019 royalty from around the Pacific Northwest receive their crowns. My own coronation/fundraiser will be held on February 23rd in Milton-Freewater, OR.  Check the Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. Facebook Events or the MRO website for further information.

In 2019 I will be teaming up with the Oregon Agriculture in the Classroom’s literacy project and I will visit schools throughout the state, educating younger students about agriculture.

I am so lucky to have two amazing gals to share my year with, MRO Taylor Ann Skramstad and JMRO Rowdy Israel.  We have so many adventures in store and will all make our supporters proud!

Rowdy Israel, 2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon!

So many exciting things have been happening, I don’t even know where to start! Back in July after a grueling competition, I had the most exciting thing happen… I, Rowdy Israel, the 12 year old Dayville Oregon cowgirl, was crowned as your 2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon!  I am so extremely excited, blessed and grateful to receive this title and opportunity and to share this journey with you all!

My First Lady in Waiting (LIW) activity was to volunteer at the Calvary Christian Horse Camp in John Day. This was six fun filled days of helping foster girls from the Portland metro area learn, care for and ride horses for the first time in their lives. We did a “Flex for Jessi” picture and I gave a presentation on being a rodeo queen. Immediately after that it was off to my local county fair. The Grant County Fair can always use volunteers and I was excited to help out. Running the main ticket gate, selling merchandise for the Lonestar concert and leading the grand parade through town with the American flag were just some of my duties and highlights.

Next, I was off to the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association (NPRA) finals located in Prineville, Oregon. The royalty luncheon got this fun filled weekend kicked off, then it was off to the Friday night rodeo performance where I helped rake around the barrels in the arena after each barrel racer ran. Saturday morning we had a Miss Rodeo Oregon meeting to attend where I got to meet up with LIW Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Meredith Moore along with LIW Miss Rodeo Oregon Taylor Ann Skramstad. Then it was off to the luncheon to watch and cheer on the NPRA queen contestants as they competed in modeling and mock interviews. Back to the rodeo I went for the Saturday night performance, to help in the arena again and sport my patriotic outfit since it was military appreciation night. As the rodeo came to an end that night, the awards and trophy saddles were handed out to the deserving cowboys and cowgirls and I was on my way back home.

Next was working on my chaps and doing my official photo shoot. Working hard to find the special one-of-a-kind leather for my chaps took a little bit of time but it was all worth it! Closely working with Melanie from Shasta Leather in Prineville has been a great experience and both she and I are very excited to show you what we have in the works! These chaps are definitely going to be one of a kind. The photo shoot was a little wild since it was first cancelled because of the rain and then 20 min later it was back on again because the sun came back out! Great pictures were taken by my sponsor Tanni Wenger Photography.

The Grant County Rodeo Queen’s coronation was my next appearance in John Day Oregon.  Helping her set up and get ready for her coronation, then attending was a great experience. Volunteering at different local events is something that I have done for several years. One event that I always enjoy is the Carrie Young Memorial event every December in John Day. This event raises money for our local elderly citizens to help them out with their needs, whether it be helping pay the electric bill, food for their household or a load of firewood cut and delivered.

On the road I was again, stopping by Shasta Leather to pick up my rodeo jacket and to venture into downtown Portland to visit Oregon Leather for supplies for my next projects in the works, with my sponsor Shannon from Toolin Turquoise Leather Co.

On New Year’s Eve, I attended the Hoof n Holler Rodeo and New Year’s Eve celebration in Albany. Arriving as Lady in Waiting, I was put to work at the KRKT radio booth, signing autographs and helping with the radio contest that they had
going on. I also assisted the rodeo clown and staff with helping throw t-shirts and other prizes to the crowd. At midnight, surrounded by family and friends, Shannon from Toolin Turquoise Leather Co. placed my crown on my hat. So after arriving as Lady in Waiting to the rodeo on December 31st, it was now January 1st and I was leaving the rodeo as 2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon!

“It Takes a Village”

They say it takes a village to raise up a child, and spending a year in the limelight as a state titleholder requires a similarly dedicated team of individuals. We give a symbolic “tip of the Greeley hat” to all of the volunteers, sponsors, and loved ones who uplifted our Jessi and allowed her to shine this year. Thank you to those friends who held her horse’s reins in a downpour, her family members whose sunglasses are now permanently covered in a light dusting of hairspray, and everyone else who wrote a check or helped light her path with your kindness and encouragement.

The Oregon Queen — November 2018

WRAPPING UP THE YEAR WITH JESSI CORNFORTH, MISS RODEO OREGON!

At Wilco’s Ladies Night!

Miss Rodeo North Dakota Pageant

With the Miss Rodeo America Pageant less than a month away, my schedule of events may be less full but I am just as busy preparing!

At the beginning of the month I traded in the 70 degree sunny weather for the snow of North Dakota for the Badlands Circuit Finals. We were kept busy running flags, signing autographs, and helping with the Miss Rodeo North Dakota Pageant.

The rest of October was filled with a few last autograph appearances and preparing for my Good Luck Party. A huge THANK YOU to everyone that donated, made desserts, and attended the event. I felt so loved the entire night, and had a blast modeling some of my Miss Rodeo America outfits.

November will be spent riding horses, studying, and doing everything I can to ensure that I will represent Oregon with pride and grace!

Jessi Cornforth, 2018 Miss Rodeo Oregon

CAN’T HELP LOVING MISS RODEO AMERICA FASHION!

December may be a time when the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit rodeos slow to a crawl, but that lull is actually the buildup for the biggest annual showdown between the top guns of the PRCA: the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The glittering lights of Las Vegas are the perfect backdrop to showcase the stars of our sport as well as the heights of western fashion, and it’s all kicked off by the prestigious Miss Rodeo America pageant.

Early in a state titleholder’s reign there are many decisions to be made; arguably, the most exciting ones involve planning a dream rodeo bucket list and assembling a western wardrobe fit for a queen. These days, rodeo royalty are encouraged to embrace and reflect current western trends like never before. The holy grail of style recognition is being noticed by the “Fashion Posse” (aka Shaina Clifford and Tiffany McGhan, the future Mrs. Tuf Cooper) and having your picture splashed on their social media accounts.

There’s a reason they say, “the devil is in the details.” Rhinestones or sequins? Retro or cutting edge? Leather or fabric? The choices are endless but when a “look” comes together it embodies not just the personality of the young lady wearing it, it also gives a nod to the rich history of women in the American West. Assembling such a wardrobe usually begins with a trip to the National Western Stock Show and the Denver Market, held every January in Denver, Colorado. Often this is a titleholder’s first entrée into the universe of high-end western fashion. A comprehensive array of vendors showcase their latest wares at wholesale prices (queens are granted entry by being affiliated with a business that retails such goods) and the energy runs high. Titleholders rub elbows with a veritable who’s who of the western elite and form important connections with reps from the companies that sponsor both the PRCA and MRA.

The items selected at the Denver Market will trickle in as they are produced and shipped out… it’s like Christmas over and over again! Wardrobe staples like Justin boots and Wrangler apparel are mixed with carefully chosen pieces from higher-end designers (Kippys, Tasha Polizzi, and Double D Ranch, for example.) This mix is then typically supplemented with custom-made looks from queen-specific designers. A lot of state titleholders gear their wardrobes to be worn all year, adding in some very special (and very secret!) looks right before the Miss Rodeo America pageant.

If you have never beheld the MRA pageant in all its pomp and circumstance you are truly missing out. For the contestants, the days are long but the experience flies by. They have formed long-lasting friendships with their fellow state titleholders and the family of rodeo personnel and contestants alike. Their sponsor dollars have been carefully allocated, they have devoured the PRCA rulebook and the ProRodeo Sports News magazine, and under each Greeley Hat Works cowboy hat is a brain crammed full of knowledge and opinions about current events. Pageant week is a whirl of horsemanship, interviews, public speaking, and modeling; when the dust settles, the pearl-and-alexandrite encrusted Landstrom’s Black Hills Gold Miss Rodeo America crown is placed on one deserving young lady’s cowboy hat. This is the beginning of her journey but for her peers it is the dazzling and bittersweet culmination of the best year of their lives.

Many Miss Rodeo Oregons have made strong showings at MRA! Our state proudly boasts one Miss Rodeo America (Mackenzie Carr Ivie, 2012) and several top-ten and top-five finishers. The most recent of these was our lovely and accomplished Kayla Vincent at the 2018 pageant. Her Fourth Runner-up showing reflects the effort she put into her year and we are so grateful to have had such a dedicated representative. This year, our excitement is reaching a crescendo as we prepare to cheer on our 2018 MRO, Jessi Cornforth. She is the crown jewel of this historic sport in our beautiful state, and the unparalleled poise, elegance, and grace she’s demonstrated throughout her reign will stand her in good stead as she shines under the bright lights of the Tropicana Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas! Please drop her a note at mrapmedia@missrodeoamerica.com (put Oregon in the subject line) or purchase a rose to be delivered to her room at night. This can be done daily and is a great way to show our appreciation for all her hard work this year. See you in Vegas!

I loved this interview outfit! I wore only Justin boots, Greeley hats, and Montana Silversmith jewelry throughout the pageant because of those companies’ sponsorship.

My Horsemanship outfit was put together just a couple of days before I left. The planned shirt and pant combination was a dye disaster so I put together a shirt from one outfit and pants from another; Tanya Cloutier helped me by dyeing my belt and boots to match.

PROMOTING HER PLATFORM — MISS TEEN RODEO OREGON ADDY CROUCH!

Out of the Darkness Walk at the State Capitol (with 2019 Little Miss NPRA Baylee Paulson)

While I didn’t attend any rodeos in October, I still managed to keep myself pretty busy.   My platform this year was to promote Suicide Prevention Awareness.  I joined the Out of the Darkness Walk in Salem to help raise funds for this cause.  2019 Little Miss NPRA, Baylee Paulson, joined me for this walk on October 13th and together we raised $340 to help prevent suicide.  It was such a great and emotional event with many people telling their stories of how they have been directly affected by suicide.  I walked in honor of several students from my school who ended their lives this year.

Next, I attended the St. Paul rodeo queen tryouts.  There were ten contestants and my horse, Sunny D, made an appearance with one of the contestants.  Congratulations to Dessa, Hannah and Caitlin on being selected to represent the St. Paul Rodeo in 2019.

Up next was the Canby Rodeo Court Tryouts.  Sunny D once again made an appearance, this time as Queen Callie’s mount to set the pattern for the contestants.  It was a great day with four contestants vying for a spot on the 2019 Court.  Congratulations to the newly crowned Queen Savannah and Princess Maddie.  I hope you have a wonderful year representing one of my favorite rodeos. I ended the night celebrating Jessi at her Miss Rodeo America send off party where she gave us a little sneak peek of some of the beautiful outfits she is going to wear at the pageant in December.  I have no doubt she will make Oregon proud. I’ll be attending Santiam Canyon Stampede tryouts in November and working on my scrapbook so it is finished in time for Meredith’s coronation in February. I hope everybody enjoys their time with their family and friends this Thanksgiving.

Sincerely,

Addy Crouch 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon

BACK AT SCHOOL — MISS TEEN RODEO OREGON BETHANY ROWE!

Late evening hunt!

Happy birthday, Angie!

Hello all!

My month of October has been almost completely full of family time and school work! Although I already miss the rodeo arena, it has been wonderful to kick back and spend some much needed time with the people and animals I love most. This year has been so fast-paced and jam-packed full of events and, although I am typically pretty busy, I sure have missed the rest of my family, friends and fur babies. To top it all off, October is deer season! I have spent the past month up in the hills of my hometown doing what I love most.

In the upcoming weeks, I am gearing up for some class room visits and holiday parades, the perfect way to wind down from a fun-filled year! While I have spent a lot of time with the community who has raised me, I did welcome the opportunity to visit with my rodeo family at Jessi’s send off party! It was wonderful to see everyone and celebrate Jessi’s year as she heads off to Vegas for the Miss Rodeo America Pageant! I am beyond excited to finish up my finals for this term and head down to Las Vegas to support her!

I have had a phenomenal year so far and would like to thank you as well as my amazing sponsors! This month I’d like to thank Northwest Hardwoods and HorseGuard for keeping my trailer on the road and my horses happy and healthy!

Sincerely, 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Bethany Rowe

It has been wonderful to be able to spend time in our community and promote the sport of rodeo. People have had a lot of questions that I have been able to answer about rodeo queening and rodeo through my wonderful experiences.

A rodeo that I enjoyed riding in grand entry was St. Paul. Attending their tryouts was a great way to spend a gorgeous October day! The girls did wonderful and I enjoy learning from watching others. It is always fun to cheer on the contestants!

Wilco’s Ladies Night was a fun time. I saw so many friends from the horse community! I met little girls who told me about their love for horses! They had a mini pony which I loved!

Jessie’s sendoff party was wonderful, and it was a great time! It is neat to see the support she has from our rodeo community. It will be great to cheer her on as she competes for Miss Rodeo America! We know she’ll do great!

One of my favorite events of the year was my visit to the Waterford Grand retirement home. Bringing the horse and the rodeo environment to the residence was an amazing experience for all! I will continue to volunteer with this amazing place with amazing people!

Thank you again for your continued support!

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM JULIE SINGER

Autumn Greetings!

Our Miss Rodeo Oregon, Jessi Cornforth, is going through all those last-minute activities getting prepared to compete at Miss Rodeo America in just a few weeks. Two weeks ago at her Good Luck party, she showed off several of the outfits she will be wearing during Pageant and they are very, very nice. The outfit she had made to show support for many types of cancer survivors was very well received by everyone.

Last weekend Lynn Haynes, her National Director, and I met with Jessi and her mom at a home in Bay City on the Oregon coast. We put her through many activities from questions, impromptu talks, to what to expect during horsemanship. She also got to kick back and relax a little as well. Remember that you can send her roses and good wishes during Pageant. We know she is going to do an awesome job and make Oregon proud!

Hope to see everyone at the General Membership meeting on Sunday November 18, 2018–Julie Singer, President

THANK YOU TO OUR VALUED SPONSORS!

The Oregon Queen — October 2018

REPRESENTING OREGON RODEO WITH JESSI CORNFORTH!

Hello everyone!  How have we already reached October? This year has flown by!
September started in the southern part of the state at the Lake County Round Up. The court and committee were so welcoming for my first time there, and they kept us as cool as possible despite the high temperatures. Next, I prepared for the infamous state queen Pendleton trip. At one point, my house was filled with 11 queens! The ladies had a blast exploring Portland, Silver Falls State Park, and one of them saw the ocean for the first time when we visited Seaside. Once we arrived in Pendleton, we had a busy schedule seeing all of the incredible history of the city, Happy Canyon Indian Pageant, and the Round Up itself.
My final stop in September and also my final Oregon rodeo was the Northwest Professional Rodeo Association Finals in Prineville. Dually and I enjoyed working the rodeo each night with Miss NPRA Baylee Crawford and seeing tons of local queens at grand entry and the Miss NPRA Pageant events.
Now that October is here and we are about 50 days away from the start, it is time to focus on the 2019 Miss Rodeo America Pageant in December! I hope to see tons of friendly faces at my Good Luck Party on October 27th from 6-8pm at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds.
Until next month–Jessi Cornforth, 2018 Miss Rodeo Oregon

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE FROM JULIE SINGER

Greetings!  Summer is officially gone and we are seeing all the beautiful colors of fall. We have three new titleholders for 2019: Miss–Taylor Ann Skramstad ; Teen–Meredith Moore; Junior–Rowdy Israel. With the help of our Ladies-in-Waiting Advisors, they are planning their coronations, picking their colors, designing their chaps, and getting ready for the fun they will have representing MROI in 2019. The Miss Rodeo America Pageant is fast approaching so we are putting our energy towards getting Jessi prepared. Her Good Luck Party is Saturday October 27, 2018 at 6:00 pm at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds in Canby, Oregon. Please come and support her!

We received approval from the members present at our general membership meeting last month to update our Bylaws to allow staggered terms for our Board members. This allows for half of the board to be elected each year for a two- year term. This ensures that we will always have at least half of the Board with experience. Ballots and meeting information will be coming soon. The activities for our MROI Teens and Junior are slowing down, but what an amazing job they have done representing us at rodeos, parades, school visits, and other youth activities.

We are in the planning stages for our MROI Queen’s Clinic, the first weekend in April 2019 at the fairgrounds in Madras, Oregon. More details will be coming out after the first of the year. We will be having more activities and incentives to increase our membership in the coming year. The Board and I are really excited with the all the new ideas we are considering. Hope to see everyone at Jessi’s Good Luck Party!

Julie Singer, President MROI

ON THE ROAD WITH BETHANY ROWE, MISS TEEN RODEO OREGON!

Miss Vancouver Rodeo and I are waiting for the first performance at the NPRA finals.

Since my last newsletter I have had the most fun imaginable! My month of September held two of my favorite events to date! First, Dad and I loaded up and headed to the Pendleton Round-up for my first visit! Dad hadn’t been since the 90’s so it was exciting for us both! We had an absolute blast at the rodeo and Happy Canyon performance! The parade had to be my favorite because MTRO Addy, JMRO Lauren, and I all got to ride in the same wagon accompanied by our driver Carly and her horse Bill. We visited with Carly nearly the entire parade! From there we were able to attend a beautiful luncheon and catch up with all of our sash sisters from around the state as well as many out-of-staters.

The following weekend our trailer made its final drive over the pass to Prineville for the year which was very bittersweet. Dad and I often joke that if we fell asleep on the McKenzie Highway we wouldn’t have to worry because the truck itself drives it so often we’d still show up at the Crooked River Round-up grounds! The NPRA finals was full of fun  from the rodeo performances to the Miss NPRA fashion show! I also took some time to catch up with some close family friends while I visited. From wowing Miss NPRA Baylee Crawford with my wicked dance moves to seeing her hand off her crown to the 2019 Miss NPRA Emylia Breckel, the weekend was full of emotion.

This past month was full of excitement and fun but I am oh so thankful to be home with my family for hunting season! I would like to take a minute to thank some of my amazing sponsors Bi-Coastal Media and Milk-E-Way Feed and Trucking for making these memories possible!

Sincerely, 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Bethany Rowe

September was one of my best months of rodeo yet! It has been such an honor to represent the sport of rodeo in our amazing state of Oregon! I plan on focusing on community events for the next three months and giving back to the community.

Pendleton was the best experiences of my year so far. Two of my sponsors and their families traveled with us and it is so wonderful to have their ongoing support! Angie Vachter has been a huge support to me and has attended most of my events with me. The parade at Pendleton was very unique and it will be a tradition we are starting with our family and friends!

The NPRA finals was a great way to show support to other rodeo queen hopefuls by helping them sell tickets and giving encouragement! It was great to talk to and thank Bob Roy who just finished making my saddle! Also, a good friend Kyle Bounds won a saddle for the bareback riding champion at the end of the finals!

In October I am volunteering at Pacific Equestrian Center for their Candlelighters ride. The event is for kids and families of kids with cancer. Kids will love roping a roping dummy! It will be so fun to be involved and work with the children!

Thank you again for all your support!

Sincerely,

THE FINAL MONTH OF RODEO WITH 2018 MISS TEEN RODEO OREGON ADDY CROUCH!

I only had a couple events scheduled in September, but boy were they big ones!

I started off in Pendleton where I was able to attend several of the Pendleton Round-Up performances, a first for me.  My favorite part of the Round-Up was of course the grand entry and the horse races!  I also attended Happy Canyon, a great Queen’s luncheon, went to the Pendleton Round-Up & Happy Canyon Hall of Fame Museum, went on the Pendleton Underground Tour and of course did a ton of shopping.  The highlight of the week was riding in a wagon with Lauren and Bethany in the Westward Ho! Parade and meeting all the visiting out of state queens MRO was hosting.

I ended the month at my last rodeo of my year, the NPRA Finals. It was bittersweet.  A special thank you to our 2019 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon, Rowdy and her mom, Nicole, for letting me borrow their sweet boy, Peanut, for the weekend.  It was also really fun attending the Miss NPRA Pageant and Fashion Show.  Congratulations to the 2019 Miss NPRA, Emylia Breckel.  I was also able to stop and watch the Sisters Rodeo queen tryouts on my way home from Prineville where all the girls did amazing.  Congrats to Riann Cornett on being crowned the 2019 Sisters Rodeo Queen.

I have a few events planned for October including the Out of the Darkness Walk for Suicide Prevention Awareness on October 13th in Salem.  I am happy to have surpassed by fundraising goal of $150.  Thank you to everyone who helped me reach my goal. I will also be supporting the contestants at the St. Paul and Canby Rodeo tryouts and cannot wait to attend Jessi’s Miss Rodeo America good luck/send off event on October 27th.

WE LOOK GOOD BECAUSE OF CHAD MORRIS!

Miss Rodeo Oregon, Inc. is so extremely fortunate to have Fervent Media as our sponsor.  Chad Morris designed our website and took care of the myriad of details in getting it online.  He is responsive to our many requests and patiently teaches the acquisition of website management skills.  It is no problem that he is based in Central Oregon and the media director lives in Eastern Oregon.  If you are looking for someone who can produce results at a very reasonable cost, contact Chad.  Check out one of his other websites at High Desert Stampede!!  We are grateful to you, Chad.

The Oregon Queen — September 2018

It hasn’t slowed down yet for Jessi!

August was another amazing month full of incredible memories. The month kicked off with a trip to Colorado Springs, Colorado for the PRCA Hall of Fame and Douglas County Fair and Rodeo. I loved hearing the stories of the eight inductees and dressing up for the Cowboy Ball. Once I arrived home, I prepared for our Miss Rodeo Oregon 2019 Pageant held at my hometown fair and rodeo, the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo. The contestants were tested on their horsemanship skills, interviewing and speeches, and their personality and appearance. It was so nice to watch the contestants compete, instead of sweating through each portion! Congratulations to our 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon, Taylor Ann Skramstad. The rest of my August was spent finalizing my Miss Rodeo America application, as well as a few one day events including the Knights of Pythias Wapato Showdown Parade. September is an exciting time in the rodeo world as it the last month that contestants can earn winnings for the 2018 season and qualify for the National Finals Rodeo.

Running in on my trusty steed, Tuffie!

Whew! This newsletter is probably going to be the hardest to write of all because trying to wrangle all of our adventures in Canby into just a few paragraphs is no easy task! We had so much fun!

We started out the weekend with the MRO contestants and judges at the pageant’s host hotel in Wilsonville. There we met all four contestants as well as Miss Rodeo Alaska, Ariel Hunt. Next it was Tough Enough to Wear Pink night at the rodeo where I signed a ton of autographs! We finished the night at the hotel for the PJ party!

The next morning was pretty relaxed so dad and I headed to Salem to meet with my favorite hat shaper at Double H. Following that, we all met back up and had lunch at Arby’s before heading over to Boot Barn in Troutdale to pick out our fashion show outfits. This was no easy task because of all of the cute stuff they had. However, with a little help from the assistant manager, Sue Ellen Vincent, and Angie Vachter, I looked pretty spiffy walking across that stage for our Boot Barn sponsored fashion show that Saturday!

Friday was our busiest day of all! From helping out with horsemanshi,p we went to lunch, then to an autograph signing at Swan Island Dahlias. After that, it was a quick power nap in Angie’s trailer and we were off to the Mock TV interviews! Finally, I was back on my horse and ready for the third night of the Canby Rodeo! After a few fashion show rehearsals, we MRO girls were feeling more or less ready for Jessi’s dance during the fashion show which we rocked! We sold pageant programs, modeled our Boot Barn outfits and then were able to sit and listen to the speeches which are my favorite! Following that was the final Canby Rodeo performance and we went out in style by crowning our next Miss Rodeo Oregon, Taylor Ann Skramstad!

The week was full of so many fun things and great people! I had an absolute blast. I would like to thank my sponsors of that trip, Timberline Tioga Taxidermy and SOA charters! Also thank you to the MRO board for putting on yet another wonderful pageant!

August was an amazing month!  I started off the month on a plane headed for four days at the Big Sky Pro Rodeo and Montana State Fair, pushing cows, running flags, signing autographs, doing radio interviews and promoting my platform this year, suicide prevention awareness and the #letstalk app. I cannot thank Keely’s family enough for being the absolute best host family and the Big Sky Pro Rodeo for being so hospitable.  It’s a week I will never forget.

Once home, Sunny D and I headed to Aurora to ride in the Aurora Colony Days Parade.  Next, I headed to my hometown rodeo, the Canby Rodeo, who just happens to be the host rodeo for the Miss Rodeo Oregon pageant.  It was a jam packed week with five rodeo performances, a trip to the Boot Barn, a PJ party, a fashion show (including a dance routine) and concluding with the crowning of our 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon.  It was a dream come true to have the honor of running in grand entry in front of all of my family and friends.  It was definitely an extra special week.  All of the Miss Rodeo Oregon contestants did a great job.  Congratulations to Taylor Ann Skramstad for winning the 2019 title.

Sunny D and I will be taking a short break from rodeos to compete at State Fair next week in 4-H and FFA.  Then in September I will be starting my senior year of high school and heading to the Pendleton Roundup and the NPRA Finals to see who will be crowned the 2019 Miss NPRA.

August was a great month attending rodeo events and promoting our wonderful sport! I enjoy sharing my love of horses with youth and giving them ideas of how they can get involved in this amazing and supportive community. This summer has been nothing short of unforgettable in every way! This title has allowed me the opportunity to help make a difference.

Northwest Youth Rodeo Association in Cottage Grove was great fun! There were so many youth riders and it was wonderful to see youth rodeo thriving. The weather was hot and the arena was dusty; this makes me so happy! It will be fun to be a part of this organization in the future and I am looking forward to it! Carrying the American Flag was a highlight of my year so far.  At the Cascade Team Penning Association Event, I was so honored to be able start the event on my horse Babe. It was held at one of my sponsor’s ranches, which made it special to me.

The support I have from family and friends has been wonderful! My family has also helped make my title possible as well as the Miss Rodeo Oregon Inc. board and I am so thankful! Camp Harlow’s has been a big part of my giving back to the community. It was an honor to be a guest speaker at their advanced youth equestrian camp. Next summer I plan on spending my time there working with the youth and sharing my love of horses!

The Miss Rodeo Oregon Pageant was so fun for me to attend. It was nice to be able to cheer for my friends and contestants as they chased their dream of becoming Miss Rodeo Oregon. The fashion show and modeling the Boot Barn outfit was one of my favorite parts of the week. It is great to be able to connect with so many people in a short amount of time. The Canby Rodeo was impressive; I look forward to attending it in the future.

As summer is winding down, I am looking forward to the events in September. We will be attending the Pendleton Round-Up with two of my sponsors and their families. I feel so fortunate to have such amazing support! The NPRA finals are always a great time too and a nice way to enjoy fall and rodeo!

Sincerely, Lauren Gibson 2018 Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon

It was quite a pageant!

The 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon pageant was held once again in Canby, OR in conjunction with the Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo…. and we could not be happier. They are the most welcoming and hard working group of people that not only care about putting on a great event for their patrons and cowboys but they also want to make sure our event is at its finest as well. We were honored that Clay Rhodes, President of the Board, Canby Rodeo, spoke to everyone assembled at the orientation.

This year we had four wonderful and qualified ladies vying for the title of Miss Rodeo Oregon 2019. They were: Taylor Ann Skramstad – Milton Freewater (Umapine), Samantha Henricks – Grants Pass, Kelsey Leinbach – Molalla and Morgan Spear – Newberg. We also had Ariel Hunt from Anchorage, AK join us as well. All are amazing young ladies and I truly enjoyed getting to know each of them during this pageant and I feel confident that they all have very bright futures ahead of them.

Along with the great contestants, we had three fabulous and fun judges–Joan Howland of New Mexico, Katherine Merck of Washington and rounding out the group was JT Croft of Kansas. They had a tough job of judging our contestants this year but I know they had a lot of fun with the girls and getting to see the sights (and tastes) of Oregon.  Barb Carr, Judges Chaperone, provided them with adventures around the area–to Pittock Mansion and Double H Western Store in Salem, and to Dippin’ Dots, Dutch Bros, and the Clackamas County Fairgrounds for Apple Pie Fries.

Pageant ran very smoothly and I would personally like to thank Lynn Haynes for being my right hand woman, our entire Executive Board who does so much behind the scenes, and our contestant chaperones–Sue Ellen Vincent and Lois Forester–and Judges Chaperone, Barb Carr.  I did not have to worry about a thing with you three in charge. A special thanks goes to Tanya Marie Utberg and the Junior/Teen Pageant for sponsoring the Wednesday night pyjama party.

We added a new sponsor this year, Boot Barn, and our Fashion Show had new energy as a result. The contestants and titleholders thoroughly enjoyed their field trip to Boot Barn in Troutdale. Thanks to Jeff DuBrock, Boot Barn Manager, for all he did!

I would like to also thank all of the award sponsors for their support. Because of their generosity we were able to step up our award packages this year which has been a big goal of mine. I would be remiss if I did not thank Jessi Cornforth and her parents for being the best people ever and to Lauren, Addy and Bethany–along with their parents–for spending your week with us as well. We have amazing titleholders this year and our organization could not be prouder of you all. Finally, Congratulations to Taylor Ann Skramstad for being crowned as 2019 Miss Rodeo Oregon. You will be embarking on an amazing and rewarding journey next year that will forever change your life.

Thanks all, Tanya Cloutier, 1st VP/Pageant Director

The Oregon Queen July/August Newsletter

On the Road with Jessi Cornforth, Miss Rodeo Oregon!

Chief Joseph Days, Joseph Oregon

With less than 10 days at home in June and July, you could say I have been busy! June kicked off with the Eastern Oregon Livestock Show and Rodeo in Union. While I was only there for 24 hours, I still managed to participate in two performances, a parade, luncheon, and then the mother of the queen found a pig and lamb for me to try showing! After a five hour all night drive back home, we loaded up for the Grand Floral Parade in Portland. I was so thankful to have an awesome support group that not only helped me the day of the parade, but the evenings beforehand while I was out of town. Together we brought home first place for the State or Regional Queen category. Celebrating however was short lived because we jetted over the mountain to Sisters Rodeo the very same day. I had a few days off and then flew to Reno Rodeo. The queen is one of my good friends from RODEO HOUSTON, and together we all had a blast. Next I went to Mountain Home, Idaho to participate in the Daniel Dopps 3D Memorial Rodeo. This was a special weekend for me because my grandma has lived in Mountain Home since 1970 and my grandpa was the mayor for 12 years. Finally we rounded out June with the Crooked River Roundup, a personal favorite of mine. I had the pleasure of staying with the Loftesness Family, and they treated Dually and me with great hospitality.

July was a whirlwind of a month! We kicked off Cowboy Christmas with the Rascal Rodeo in Molalla, and from there completed at least one performance at the Molalla Buckeroo, St. Paul Rodeo, and the Eugene Pro Rodeo. One of my sponsors, the St. Paul Rodeo, was my base camp all week, and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with their committee and volunteers. With one hour at home to pack, I headed to Estes Park, Colorado after the last St. Paul performance. In Colorado I enjoyed the “Rodeo with Altitude”, the Rooftop Rodeo. After one day at home to hit the Miss Rodeo Oregon Pre-Pageant Orientation, I took off on a two week road trip to hit the Snake River Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, and Chief Joseph Days. Participating in the Pink on the Dirt Fashion Show in Idaho and running my “fly by” in Cheyenne will be two of the greatest highlights of my year. August is now upon us, and rodeo season still is not slowing down. If you see me along the rodeo trail, please say “Hi”!

Trail ride at St. Paul

June was a whirlwind month!  I kicked off the month in St. Paul for the NWYRA rodeo and the St. Paul trail ride.  The weather was perfect.  I enjoyed spending time with the Sanchez sisters (the NWYRA queen and princess).  I was so happy that my sister, Brooklyn, was able to join me for the fun three hour trail ride.   Next, I headed to the Biggest Little Show in the World, the Sisters Rodeo.  This rodeo is extra special to me as my sister was the 2014 Sisters Rodeo queen.  It was so fun to do run ins at all four performances.  The highlight of the weekend was running into World Champion and Oregon cowboy, Steven Peebles. I took a small break from rodeos to head to Moses Lake, WA to compete with my high school drill team at Regionals.  There was some tough competition and we ended up placing 4th. Next, I headed to the Biggest Little Show on the Coast, the Tillamook Rodeo.  This is always such a great rodeo.  I carried flags, pushed cows, attended a queens luncheon and rode Sunny D in the June Dairy Days where we won a 4th place trophy.  I also had the chance to check out the new and improved Tillamook Cheese Factory as it was their opening weekend. Finally, I ended the month of June in Prineville at the Crooked River Roundup.  I attended their amazing queen’s luncheon and the Saturday night performance.  Thank you to the Heintz family for always letting me borrow their sweet mare, Lena, when I am in Central Oregon. July was definitely my busiest month of the year.  I attended 13 rodeo performances and four parades…and somehow managed to squeeze in my 4-H Horse Fair and an open horse show in between. I started the month off with a bang at the Rascal Rodeo held in Molalla.  This is a special needs rodeo I look forward to every year.  Later that day, I rode in the Molalla Kiddie Parade (placing 1st) and ended the day with the first of four evening performances that I attended at the Molalla Buckeroo.  This rodeo is extra special to me because it’s my hometown rodeo.  I was able to push cows a couple nights and participated in the donkey races twice (almost winning it one night). On the 4th of July, I made a quick trip to St Paul to ride in their parade, attend their Queen’s luncheon and ride in grand entry at the afternoon performance.  I also attended a couple of their evening performances later that week.  The St Paul Rodeo is always a good time. I ended Cowboy Christmas in Vancouver.  I have never attended the Vancouver Rodeo before and it was a lot of fun.  The stands were jam packed!  I went straight from the Vancouver Rodeo to the Clackamas Co Fairgrounds to start three days of 4-H Horse Fair.  I had a one day break before heading to Philomath to attend the Philomath Frolic and Rodeo and our Junior and Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon Pageant.  It was a hot, but fun-filled three days of parades, rodeo arena runs, donkey races (we won’t talk about that), horsemanship, interviews, and speeches and luncheons.  I also debuted my Suicide Prevention Awareness shirt that weekend.  Congrats to the 2019 titleholders, Rowdy and Meredith!   I finished off the month of July at the Santiam Canyon Stampede in Sublimity for both of their performances.  They were so kind and made me feel so welcomed.  Pushing cows with their queen, Hailey, was so much fun.  I also managed to squeeze in one more parade that weekend, the Hubbard Hop Festival Parade where I took home the grand prize for youth equestrian. I look forward to giving my horse some well deserved time off as I head to Montana the first week of August to attend the Big Sky Pro Rodeo and Montana State Fair with Miss Teen Rodeo Montana, Keely Drummond.  Keely and I have a lot in common.  My platform this year is to promote Suicide Prevention Awareness.  Keely has been helping to promote a mental health and suicide prevention app called #letstalk.  I hope to learn more about this app and help spread a little more awareness while in Montana.  But don’t worry, I’ll be back in plenty of time to attend one of my all-time favorite rodeos, the Canby Rodeo, the host rodeo to our Miss Pageant.  I am really looking forward to the contestant pajama party and the fashion show.  Good luck to all the ladies competing! Until next month –  Addy Crouch 2018 Miss Teen Rodeo Oregon

What a busy week and although I was tired, Cowboy Christmas did not disappoint!  To start the week we headed to the Crooked River Roundup where my 7-year-old Ethel and I got to enjoy two full days of events! I think her favorite part was pushing cows with Queen Riann as she is a full blood cutting horse! Then it was off to Molalla, Sunday and Monday! Molalla was action packed from teaching roping at the Rascal Rodeo to absolutely dominating the donkey race with Brooklyn Scheer and Baylee Crawford!

Next up was Yoncalla in the afternoon of the 3rd and Eugene in the evening, then
back to Yoncalla the 4th for the parade and rodeo and once again we were on the road to Eugene! The second day of Yoncalla, Ethel pulled a shoe and was out of commission and not able to run in at Eugene. With some quick work by my coordinator Angie and the rest of my rodeo family, I had a horse lined up for Eugene by the time I had everything loaded up in the trailer! After running in and pushing cows on my borrowed horse Ditto, we hustled home that night to take care of Ethel and didn’t get back on the road until Friday. Although that put a dent in our travels, Dad and I were excited to be home for a minute and Ethel couldn’t wait to see her pasture pals!  Friday, we loaded up Tuffie and went to my final performance of the Eugene Pro and I even got to push Trevor Brazil’s calf back! The next morning we headed to Lapine for the queens luncheon and rodeo!  It is an understatement to say I missed my Central Oregon friends!  The whole week was filled with horses, roping, rodeo and most of all friends and I wouldn’t change this experience for the world!

What a month! July has been my favorite time so far! My dad and I have been so busy traveling all over the state this month so it was nice to end it at our county fair! The week was chock full of events from attending the ribbon cutting ceremony, meeting Ashley McBryde, helping out our local pageant (which my dad head judged for), to finally bringing my platform and goals to life; I had the very best week you could ever imagine! The Rascal Rodeo was a blast! The kids got to compete in five events- saddle bronc, bull riding, roping, barrel racing and they even got to practice their hot laps! From there we took to the midway and rode so many rides that Junior Miss Rodeo Oregon Lauren Gibson, Sisters Rodeo Queen Hailey Konze, and Miss Eugene Pro Rodeo Amira Johnson’s heads were spinning! After rides we met some horses and had a relaxing barbecue before rodeo time! I am so thankful to all of my visiting royalty, as well as volunteers, Mattie Maggard-NPRA Barrel Racer, Bailey Wallack- NYRA barrel racer and breakaway roper, Justin Houston- PRCA Bull Rider, Brayden Schmitt- NPRA Team Roper, and Harley Houston-NYRA Barrel Racer! I also want to thank our corporate sponsors, the Coos County Fair Board, HEMR Industrial, Miss Rodeo Oregon Inc, and Freedom Graphics for helping me make this goal come to life! What an adventure this has been!

It has been so much fun promoting the sport of rodeo and sharing my love for rodeo with youth and people of all ages this summer!

This has been the BEST cowboy Christmas ever! I  loved representing my hometown rodeo,  Eugene Pro Rodeo! In the past I was their 2016 and 2017 Junior Queen; but this year as Jr Miss Rodeo Oregon has opened up new and exciting doors for me!  This Rodeo is near and dear to my heart as they have helped me get where I am today. I love the feeling of riding in the arena with my friends, family and local community there to support me.

I could not have imagined attending so many wonderful rodeos in such a short, fun filled amount of time!  I am happy to be able to tell you about a few of my experiences!

The Crooked River Roundup is one of my favorites because they treat each and every queen so special. The queens luncheon is so memorable with so much great food and good conversations!  It was extra special to have one of our sponsors and friends attend all of the events with us, Matt and Amy Hogan of Rolling H Ranch. Also our friend Denis Fast, chairman of the HIgh Desert Stampede, and his wife Lisa spent time with us during the rodeo and I am sure they are loving watching the queen lifestyle up close as they have spent three fun rodeos with us so far!

Molalla Buckeroo was our next rodeo of the week.  It was an experience that we will never forget.  It was great to sign autographs and do run ins with Jessi, Bethany, and Addy!

St. Paul was an experience that is unforgettable. It is such a big rodeo with amazing talent. We have great rodeo friends that we have met on the rodeo road and we were able to hang out with and do a lot of horse riding together!

To end the amazing week we attended the La Pine Rodeo. My horse Babe has been in that arena so many times with my grandma. It was so special to have my grandpa attend and watch me push cattle, my very favorite thing to do!

The Philomath Frolic and Rodeo was special, and it was fun for me to cheer on the 2019 contestants for Junior and Teen Miss Rodeo Oregon.  I am so proud of all the contestants for reaching toward their goals of a title!

Santiam Canyon was so much fun.  I loved pushing cattle and being in the saddle almost the whole rodeo!  The rodeo board was so hospitable, and it is on our list of favorite rodeos to attend.

I was able to help put on my hometown rodeo of the Coburg Kids Rodeo in mid-July.  My brother and sister were able to participate, and my brother won a medal!  I saw many of my local sponsors and was able to help promote the local businesses who sponsor me!

The latest rodeo was the Coos County Fair and Rodeo.  It was such a wonderful experience working with the kids and bringing awareness to Down Syndrome  Riding the rides with the kids was such a blast!

I could not have imagined attending so many wonderful rodeos in such a short, fun filled amount of time! Thank you to all of my family, friends and sponsors!
